Nova Scotia’s new car dealerships will likely pay costly fines when the Nova Scotia Department of Labour inspectors visit.  A recent review of 30 new car dealerships undertaken by department inspectors revealed on average, 17 violations per store.  Each violation could result in a penalty ranging from $500.00 to $1,000.00, based on the seriousness of the violation (that’s $8,500.00 to $17,000.00!!).  Failure to correct the violation results in a second penalty, double the amount of the first. Last year, legislation took effect that gives Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour and Advanced Education’s Occupational Health and Safety advisor the ability to issue orders when violations of health and safety laws are found in workplaces.  These orders may result in fines or penalties. So far in 2011, fines amounting to approximately $350,000.00 have been issued to Nova Scotian workplaces.  The province intends the Administrative Penalty System to serve as a deterrence tool, to compliment the education, promotion, enforcement and prosecution efforts currently in place.  The goal is to reduce workplace deaths, injuries and incidents all of which cost families, employers and government alike.   The range of penalties not only applies to employers, but supervisors and managers as well. Your Safety Association is introducing a safety inspection & audit service for your use which tests your dealership’s compliance with Nova Scotia’s Health and Safety laws.  The results of the inspection & audit are provided to you only, and will allow your dealership to identify faults in advance of a government inspectors’ unit. A series of meetings are planned later this month – the locations are listed  below – plan to attend the meeting nearest you

Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Safety Association approved by the Workers Compensation Board

July 03, 2009

Garrett Sears, President of the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Safety Association, and his fellow NSADSA board members, are pleased to announce that the Nova Scotia Automobile Dealers Safety Association has been approved by the Workers Compensation Board of Nova Scotia.  The Safety Association will commence formal operations this fall, with the addition of the Safety Association levy to new car automobile dealers' WCB invoices for 2010.  Invoices including the levy will be issued in September 2009.

‘While the initial work of the Safety Association will focus on setting up operations, determining core safety training course requirements, and establishing communications with our members, our ultimate goal is to reduce workplace injuries and illnesses, and the costs for both workers and employers, associated with these injuries," noted Sears.  "The Board encourages all members of the Safety Association to participate fully in the programs and services that will be launched in the coming months."

Members of the Safety Association include all businesses classified under the Workers Compensation Board Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Code 6311 - New Car Automobile Dealerships.
